About
We are a small neighborhood coffee shop in Chongqing, China. Our name is Shifang Coffee.
Evidence of the Present began with the shop’s fifth anniversary. It records time, and the traces it leaves in the shop.
Evidence of Sound
Each day, at roughly the same time, we record thirty seconds of ambient sound inside the shop. At the end of each month, the recordings are joined into one continuous monthly archive.
Evidence of Time
When we arrive each day, we write the date, arrival time, and weather on a small slip of paper. Before closing, the slip is placed in a coin bank.
Evidence of Process
A manual counter sits on the bar. Visitors who wish to take part can press it and let the number continue to grow. On the last day of each month, we record the final number and reset the counter.
If you are in Chongqing, you are welcome to visit Shifang Coffee for a delicious cup of coffee. If you wish, you can also press the counter and leave behind a trace that is quiet but real.
